"Explore everything, early," Keeley Cordingley said, a seasoned financial communication professional. "Your career doesn't have to be linear."
PRSSA welcomed Cordingley, who has built a dynamic career across various communication roles. Her advice to students centered on the importance of building relationships and having confidence in your unique abilities. She shared what she wished she had known when she was in college, encouraging us to get involved, pursue opportunities boldly, and embrace change.
"Be authentic, be yourself," Cordingley said. "How you value yourself shapes how others treat you."
Cordingley also spoke on why realness and relationship building are especially important in fundraising. People connect to authenticity, and they give to what they feel connected to.
She also promoted showing potential donors how donations have and could make a real difference. She reflected on her own unexpected journey into the nonprofit sector, explaining how it opened her eyes to the importance of finding an organization whose mission, vision, and values truly align with your own.
Finally, Cordingley talked about personal workplace characteristics.
"Ask questions to improve what's there," Cordingley said. "Growth belongs to the curious."
To that end, we walked away with a renewed commitment to confidence, authenticity, and curiosity. As young professionals, we are grateful for Cordingley's investment in the next generation, reminding us all that no matter the stage of life, everyone needs a place to start, a place to grow, a place to learn.
To all professionals, amateurs, and seasoned, may we continue to show up with open minds, ready to learn, evolve, and invest in those coming after us.
